breaking news from baltimore this morning where several media outlets are reporting that former ravens owner art modell has died. he had been hospitalized yesterday at johns hopkins for organ failure. modell purchased the cleveland browns in 1961 and ended up moving the team to baltimore in 1996. that move made him a hero in charm city, but made him hated back in cleveland. the 87-year-old modell still held a 1% stake in the raifns. he served as -- ravens. he served as president of the nfl in the 1960s, overseeing the first negotiations of contracts with players and he was key in getting monday night football games on tv. >> what a huge name in our area. >> football. >> yeah, football. >>> it is 7:16. gwent is here to talk about this thursday weather. >> hot and sticky, you're going to want to be prepared, pump up the ac today. drink lots of water, that's the key thing in terms of our forecast. let's begin with the fox 5 accuweather radar and we'll show you what's going on because we have some rain that's developed. we're not talking a total washout here, folks, but some of you will c

this morning from baltimore. former ravens owner art modell has died. he passed away early this morning after a brief hospital stay at johns hopkins. modell bought the cleveland browns in 1961 and moved the team to baltimore in 1996. that move made him a hero in charm city but it made him hated back in cleveland. maryland governor martin o'malley issued a statement that says in part, quote, art brought the game and spirit of football back to baltimore. he helped reinvigorate baltimoreans' sense of pride in their team and their city. art modell was 87 years old. >>> checking headlines now and beginning overseas, two american soldiers died in afghanistan yesterday when their army scout helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the nation. also the afghan defense ministry fired hundreds of afghan soldiers in an investigation into insider attacks against nato trainers following a rash of green on blue killings. afghanistan is reevaluating soldiers to stop the attacks. >>> hurricane isaac's aftermath is posing big problems for fishermen. some waterways are clogged with debris which has blocked the

thurgood marshall. we are starting out this morning with temperatures at 73 in annapolis. 69 at baltimore. 73 at quantico. d.c. is at 72. 66 in martinsburg and 67 degrees at dulles. so overall, it will be fairly nice today. mostly sunny. we are looking at 90 degrees. winds from uth the soat five to 10 miles per hour. one our models wants to bring us a little light shower between the 4:00 and 6:00 hour to our northwest. then we'll keep an eye on that. so far, i think it is looking pretty good but a wet saturday. guess what. it is not a weekend washout. so we'll have some changing conditions for you then and wait until you see the full seven-day forecast. i think some of our views are might like that. >> i hope so. i'm banking on that seven-day forecast because it has been so rainy. >> we do great with deposits. you just keep doing that. >> all right, james wright. what is happening on the roads this morning. >> we do have some problems to report. let's start off with metrorail and then we'll get to the crew in sky fox. if you are traveling metro's orange line, this is where we had problems

baltimore high school has a bail hearing today. 18-year-old robert gladden faces attempted murder and other charges in the august 27 shooting at perry hall high school. he shot 17-year-old daniel borowy in the school cafeteria. he left the hospital on monday. >> two women facing child endangerment charges after police made a disturbing discovery at their home daycare center in dale city. the women were arrested on tuesday. police and child protection found 21 children under the age of four inside the home on abilene way. some strapped into car seats and others kept in a closet and a bathroom. >> my heart bleeds. to hear something like that is very shocking. . to hear that a provider was not licensed with 21 children in their home is very shocking. >> police say the women did have a home day care permit but only to watch five children. >> today is the final chance for drivers to weigh in on proposed tax on the dulles toll road. airport authority will hold its final public hearing tonight at spring hill elementary school in mclean. it wants to gradually raise tolls from $2.25 now to $4.50 by

into baltimore and north up 83. then a lot of shower activity to the north and east. what will happen today is the focal point for most of the showers will be off to our north and east. can see the heavy rain into southern pennsylvania and central new jersey. i don't think we'll be the main feature -- our main feature won't be showers and thunderstorms. but we will be locked in the cloud cover. the ever-present possibility of that showers and storms could develop at any point in a very unstaicial atmosphere. you have to be ready for that potential later today. a warm front fridaying to work through here will bring rain not only to the washington area but to much of the eastern seaboard here for another couple of days and then finally, finally, we'll kick this whole very wet air mass out of here as we get into the end of the week. showers and storms likely again today. not going to rain all day but they could pop up at any point. temperatures get close to 90 by wednesday and thursday. we'll gradually dry out and by friday, things should freely pretty good around here with sunshine, less humi

very nicely. just a little bit of fog. here is a look at where our temperatures are. 69 at baltimore. we have 71 at hagerstown, 07 at winchester and 66 degrees at culpeper. we've got a weak front to the south of us. not looking at much happening there with that. but this is the big weather maker for tomorrow. today, we're looking at plenty of sunshine for you. there is one of the models that does want to bring is a little bit of wet weather later on this afternoon and our futurecast does show a light, light shower to our northwest at about the 4:00 hour or so. other than that, we are talk nice conditions. it will be hot today though but this is the front. this front will push its way across as we move through into saturday. it will bring us widespread showers and a chance of some thunderstorms so prepare yourself for it. could see a little bit in the early part of the day and than a break and a little bit more in the afternoon. primarily in the afternoon along and ahead of this front is where we expect to see some storms and showers. just prepare yourself accordingly. we've got dry c

, that was thrilling. my father had been mayor of baltimore. one of the leaders of the kennedy campaign in maryland. the first night we got there, it was the dinner for him. we all saw the president, the family very differently. after he made his speech at the stadium, which was stark, no one ever did that, fabulous seats. my father want to go to a famous restaurant in los angeles. we did. my father said this is really an expensive restaurant, how did you choose the restaurant. compared to baltimore, it was very expensive. i remember him not complaining, but making the point when the door opened and here comes senator kennedy. he came right over, what did you think of the speech? ask me what i thought. all of a sudden the prices came way down. >> suddenly it was not worth it. take a one of the most memorable single images of this convention ran on the front of "the new york time" was you with the women members of the house. but was a like to stand up there? >> it was pretty exciting. that was only half of those we have in the house. it was pretty exciting because of the connection. it was so exciti

a month and a half the yankees began a four-game series with the orioles in baltimore. the yankees had a one game lead on the orioles coming into the game. and the o's strike early. matt weeder's three-run home run in the first inning, it's 4-0 orioles already. yankees were getting blown out but rallied in the eighth scoring five runs capped by ichiro's two run single, tied the game at six. but in the bottom half of the frame, adam jones at the plate hits a bomb into the left field seats. orioles hit six home runs off yankee pitching. baltimore goes on to win 10-6. yankees and o's again tied atop the al east, three more games against each other this weekend. >>> nationals going for the sweep over the cubs. things get ugly. couple coaches start jawing at each other. the benches, bull pens clear in washington and nothing happens. a lot of standing around, people looking at each other, talking. no punches thrown. but still a little bad blood left over. bryce harper going to take exception to a pitch way inside, takes a step toward the mound, this time a little more serious, benches and bu

after watching a baseball game in baltimore. he was thrown 30 feet in the air on impact and scraped along another 20 feet on the pavement after he hit the ground. i ran to his side and held him and called his name, but he was limp and still, without breath or pulse. his eyes were open with the empty stare of death, and we prayed, the two of us, there in the gutter, with only my voice. his injuries, inside and out, were massive, and for terrible days he lingered between life and death. tipper and i spent the next thirty days and nights at his bedside. our family was lifted and healed, in no small measure by the love, compassion and prayers of thousands of people, most of whom we never even knew. albert is plenty brave and strong, and with the support of three wonderful sisters-- karenna, kristin, and sarah-- and two loving parents who helped him with his exercises every morning and prayed for him every night, he pulled through. and now, thank god, he has fully recovered, and he runs and plays and torments his older sisters like any little boy.
